🏠 Tactile Home Screen, Free Barcode Scanner & AI Nameplate Prefill — May 2026 Update
The home screen features a refined visual structure with grouped sections and tactile feedback. A free built-in barcode and QR scanner lets any user instantly search or link equipment — offline and with no subscription required. Plus, the AI Nameplate Scanner flows directly into a pre-filled New Equipment form.
The May 2026 update to Equipment Tracker Pro is the biggest home screen rework since launch. The goal was simple: get you to the right piece of equipment faster, with fewer taps, regardless of whether you have a Pro subscription or not.
Here is what changed, why it changed, and what it means for your workflow.
A Clean, Grouped Layout with Tactile Feedback
The old home screen was a simple list of buttons. In this update, we have completely restructured the navigation into a modern, grouped layout to make finding actions effortless. The new screen is organized into dedicated sections: AI Scanner & Quick Actions, Manual & Archive Actions, My Equipment, and AI Tools & Reports.
Additionally, every action button now responds to touch with custom spring-press micro-animations, providing tactile, responsive feedback that makes navigating the app feel premium. We also replaced the standard native alerts when adding equipment with a smooth, custom slide-up bottom sheet, aligning the entire experience with our sleek dark-mode visual theme.
Free Barcode & QR Scanner — No Subscription Required
The most significant addition for free users is the built-in barcode and QR code scanner. Tap the green "Scan Barcode / QR" card on the home screen, and your device camera opens as a live scanner — no AI, no internet connection required, no Pro subscription needed.
Point it at any barcode or QR code on or near your equipment and the app searches your database instantly. It matches against serial numbers, model numbers, asset tags, and equipment IDs. If a match is found, you are taken directly to that equipment profile. If no match is found, you are prompted to create a new equipment record with the scanned code pre-filled as the asset tag.
This feature supports every major barcode format you will find in the field: QR Code, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Data Matrix, PDF417, ITF-14, Codabar, and Aztec. Linear barcodes on older equipment nameplates, QR tags you print yourself, manufacturer codes on packaging — all handled natively by your device camera hardware without sending a single byte to a server.
Linking Custom QR Codes & Barcodes to Your Equipment
Not all physical QR codes or barcodes are pre-encoded with clean model numbers or serial numbers. In the field, you will often find job-specific manufacturer tags (like CaptiveAire's customized label strings), random receipt barcodes, or generic asset stickers that do not exist in your database.
The good news is that you can now link any of these custom codes directly to any existing equipment profile! There are two easy ways to do this:
1. **Via the Scanner**: When you scan an unrecognized QR code or barcode, a "Link to Existing" option appears. Tap it, choose your building first to narrow down your list, select the unit, and the code is linked. Re-scanning that code will now redirect you straight to that profile.
2. **Via the Equipment Profile**: Open the specific equipment unit you want to link, scroll down to the "Identification" section where the QR / Barcode data slot is located, and tap the small scanner icon next to it. Scan the tag on the unit, and it is linked instantly.
This linking capability is 100% free, works offline, and lets you turn any generic sticker on a unit into a functional, direct deep-link shortcut!
Why Barcode Scanning Is Free
Our rule on Pro features is straightforward: if a feature requires AI processing, cloud compute, or significant infrastructure cost, it is behind the Pro paywall. If it runs entirely on your device using built-in hardware, it should be available to everyone.
Barcode scanning is pure native camera hardware. Your phone's camera has been able to read barcodes for years. We just built the interface to connect that capability to your equipment database. There is no reason to charge for it.
AI Smart Scanner — Now Routes Directly to New Equipment (Pro)
The Pro AI Nameplate Scanner has always been able to photograph a nameplate and extract 40+ specification fields. What it could not do before was flow that data directly into a new equipment form when no match was found in your database.
Now it does. When you scan a nameplate and the app cannot find a matching unit, it presents a "Create New Equipment" option. Tap it and you land on the New Equipment screen with Manufacturer, Model Number, Serial Number, and all extracted technical specifications already filled in — voltage, BTU, refrigerant type, SEER rating, refrigerant charge weight, and more. The nameplate photo is attached automatically. You add the building, confirm the name, and save. The whole process takes under a minute for a unit that has never been documented before.
The same flow is also accessible from the "Add Equipment" menu on the home screen. Tap Add New Equipment, choose "AI Nameplate Scan," and the scanner launches. If a match is found in your database, you go to that record. If not, you flow into the pre-filled new equipment form.
What This Means for Your Workflow
For technicians: you can now walk up to any piece of equipment, scan whatever barcode or QR code is on it, and either pull up the existing record or start creating a new one — all without leaving the home screen or knowing anything about the unit in advance.
For property managers: the organized home screen provides quick, structured pathways to browse inventory, generate reports, or scan incoming invoices with Gemini AI. In addition, you can always check your real-time database metrics—like the live count of managed buildings, active units, and parts in stock—conveniently inside Settings.
For new users: the home screen now offers a clean, visual roadmap of what the app contains and offers clear paths to add your first equipment, all from a single screen.
Update your app to get the new tactile home screen. It is available now on iOS and Android.
